Oscars 2011

I love the Oscars! I can't help it. From the dresses and the commentary to the awards and acceptance speeches I just get a thrill.

Mr. Neruda and I enjoy having Oscar parties and this year was no different. It was a party of three and one of us slept through the majority of the program with one small eating break. The rest of us got some fun appetizer take out and went to town in our pjs voicing our opinions, judging everyone and gorging ourselves. It was a blast. Possibly the best Oscar party we have thrown yet.

The Oscars themselves were not that exciting. Mr. Neruda was devastated by The Social Network not winning best picture and I was annoyed that Melissa Leo won best supporting actress (her speech didn't help anything either). But mostly I couldn't stop focusing on whether James Franco was stoned or not. For his sake I hope he was.

Curse You Oklahoma!

Well, the Oscars have been announced which is always exciting fun. Until you read the list of nominations and see just how screwed we are in Oklahoma. Mr. Neruda and I are huge Oscar geeks. We like to try and watch all the Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress films and then as many of the supporting as we can. Probably a waste of time and ridiculous, but it’s our thing.

However, this year we were thwarted. We really thought we were doing well. We have seen all but one Best Pic, missing the one Oklahoma denied us, and thought we had seen what would be all of the Actor and Actress films. Then the nominations came out with quite a few curve balls and we really don’t stand a chance. Rabbit Hole never came here and it won’t be on video before Oscar night. The same is true about Blue Valentine, 127 Hours, Biutiful, and Animal Kingdom. I am hopeful that Quail will finally get 127 Hours since they do the Best Pictures before Oscar night and Animal Kingdom should come out on DVD before the night. But for the rest we are simply screwed.

Stupid Oklahoma and its limited releases!!!! I hate being screwed (unless it is by Mr. Neruda, then it can be delightful!).

Come on Hollywood!!!!!!!

In more news of ruining all my viewing pleasure, the maker of Vampire Diaries is going to revamp X-Files into a sexy teen paranormal investigation thing. I want to die. Can't we remake things that are older than a decade or so? These are things that do not need revamping, maybe ever, but certainly not anytime soon. What is wrong with Hollywood and where are all the orginal ideas?!?!?!?!?

Stupid article

Scary!

One of the scarier things I've read in a long time:

A new Buffy movie without Joss Whedon!

Gangs have devolved

In this day and age gangs seem to be all about drugs and violence. This makes me sad. For years I have thought that was the only way for gangs to be. I have watched The Wire, I know.

But then I began to do a little historical research. Apparently gangs have not always been this way. There was a time when violence was a small part of their day and they really only dabbled in cigarettes and booze. They sang and danced. They combed their hair a lot and snapped. They were cool.

If Grease and The West Side Story can be believed there is a completely different way for gangs to exist. Instead of people trying so hard to change them and break up their gangs, let's put that energy into choreography and lyric writing.

It also seems best to get them when they are young because they aren't as cautious and are more limber. That way we can really get the high leaps out of them off of fire escapes and the like.

I am going to bring my message to the inner city schools and non-profit organizations. I feel my cause will be helped with the above mentioned National Geographic videos that are perfect for proving my point by showing gangs interacting in their natural habitat a few decades ago.

Terrifying and Exhilarating

It is both terrifying and exhilerating that Katheryn Bigelow won for best director tonight.

It is terrifying that a woman has still not accomplished some things in 2010. How appalling that there are so many things that women, blacks, hispanics, homosexuals, etc. have not done or been kept from doing.

However, it is so exhilerating that there are still untried waters for women. I could accomplish something and be know as the first woman to do it. I could be like Amelia Earhart, Victoria Woodhull, or Sally Ride. Sometimes I get depressed and bogged down with the fact that there is no more adventure in the world.

When I was a child, my dream was to be the first pirate to sail across the Bermuda Triangle. When I found out that was done everyday, I decided to be the first pirate to sail up the Mississippe River. It was quite the blow when I discovered that was done all the time by casino boats. It became difficult to dream of new things in the 2oth century. So much has been done, which is amazing and wonderful. So wonderful that women and minorities have so many rights.

However, there is still an exhileration in knowing that there are things that women have never done. We need a president, we need to be able to go into combat and submarines, etc. The world is full of firsts and we can all be involved.

Up . . . tear

I just watched Up. I have heard a lot about it. Oh, it is so good, it made me cry, blah, blah. However, I have been crying on and off through the whole thing. It is ridiculous.

This is possibly the worst movie to watch while going through a quarter-life crisis. The first ten minutes broke my heart with the spunky Ellie having such big dreams and not achieving any of them. But then to see the beautiful marriage the two of them had made it seem like not fulfilling her dreams was okay. But I don't think I can agree with that.

Can't having a sweet and fulfilling marriage be coupled with acheiving ridiculously adventerous dreams? Life is hard and adulthood sucks. Life is full of compromise and I hate selling out.

But then Russell, the little boy, says that it's the boring stuff he remembers most. And I think there is truth in that. I think there is great value in appreciating the little things. However, I also hope that I don't give up life and adventure for memories and my stuck-in-a-rut ways.

I am just going to have to bundle Mr. Neruda up with Mariella and Hester, sling them on my back and head off into the great unknown. Or possibly Mr. Neruda could take a pet and use his own legs and we could hike it together. I think that might be the greatest adeventure of all.

Overall I give the movie two thumbs up and a bucket of tears. However, I find it hard to believe that an old man who must use a cane can really climb all over the outside of a moving blimp, but whatever.

Paper Heart does not prove love

I recently watched the movie, Paper Heart . It was a pretty low quality movie with little direction. It was forced and disingenuous. Basically it was a cheap, sad, unfunny version of When Harry Met Sally.

The part of the movie that really warmed my heart was how Oklahoma was represented. I love that our great state was represented by a biker bar with the most hick accents I have ever heard. The bikers told jokes about how much they love beating their wives and how much their wives hate being beat. We made Arkansas look really good. I mean REALLY good. Texas and the quick marriage chapels in Las Vegas also looked much, much better. Wow.

The only enjoyable aspects of the movie were some of the real couples telling about special moments in their relationships. I enjoyed one about a hopeless suitor saving the shoes of the woman he wanted. And another about a soldier rushing home to see the birth of his child and once he saw that both his wife and baby were fine he passed out on the floor. The best part about those stories is that they are flawed and real. And it was not at those moments that they knew they would love that person forever, they were just quirky moments that showed a part of their love.

True love does not exist. It is a bunch of Americanized fairy tale crap. Romantic comedies and Disney has given us a false look at the world and relationships. I think love does exist but I think it takes a lot of work. Love is more about comfort, trust and enjoyment as opposed to lightning strikes and love at first sight. I also do not believe that there is only one true love for each of us. I think I chose Mr. Neruda and may have to choose him a few more times in my life over other attractive guys that I could get along with and are new and interesting. But because I chose his love and continue to choose it, I think that it is more special and important than anything fate could have russled up for me. I have seen some of the "love at first sight" couples and frankly, they look like they should have waved good-bye to one another in high school and dated around awhile in college.

This movie was a disappoint to me and made me cringe to have other Americans looking at that image of Oklahomans.

Ah, the public

Yesterday, at work, some circulation people found something interesting on a DVD case. Stuck across the chest of the man on the front cover was a label that read, You will read this movie.

Apparently, the fact that it was a German foreign film was not enough of a clue for them, and the rest of the world in their mind. So, out of the goodness of their heart they created a label for our movie. It could be that they have paid us this service multiple times so we are now checking all foreign films for this disclaimer.

My theory is that someone got a new label maker for Christmas and ran out of things to label around their house so they got creative. You really can't get annoyed in the face of creativity.

W

Scary.
You hear about it as it is happening. But boy is it alarming to sit down and watch his whole life condensed, especially the last eight years, into about 2 hours.
Oh my.
Also, Karl Rove creeps me out.

The Class . . . Wow

Mr. Neruda and I watched The Class last night. I was completely exhausted when it was over. The intensity of the film was incredible. Having both been teachers, we probably related to the film more than most but it was overall powerful for anyone. It relates the look and feel of a classroom better than anything I have watched before. Fights do break out in the classroom, horrible things are said (sometimes by both students and teachers), students will do anything to get out of learning, will be incredibly critical and mean towards their teacher, and sadly teachers will try to play the respect me because I'm an adult card.
I think that was one of the worst things the teachers did in that movie. Trying to force respect just because they are older is a fast way to lose teenagers. I truly don't see a problem with the teacher saying the girls were acting like skanks. I don't see a problem with him returning their sarcasm. I saw a problem with him expecting respect he had not earned and I saw a problem with him being so lax with how they spoke with one another.

I did think that the over all feel of the movie was spot on, for better or for worse. I think it is hard to not feel like you are fighting hard in a losing battle. God bless the tiny pockets of hope that are sprinkled throughout.
